Viburnum - Chicago Lustre® Arrowwood

Chicago Lustre® Arrowwood Viburnum, viburnum dentatum 'Synnestvedt', is selected for its upright rounded, dense habit and glossy, deep green foliage that turns red-purple in fall. The creamy white flowers bloom in June and mature into clusters of globe-shaped fruit. The fruit are deep porcelain blue to blue-purple, maturing in August and providing food for the birds. Chicago Lustre is a medium-sized to large-sized ornamental shrub maturing at about 8-10 feet in height and width, although larger under optimum conditions. It has an upright oval growth habit in youth, becoming arching, spreading, and suckering with age. It has a medium growth rate and prefers full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soils. This viburnum is highly adaptable to dry soils, poor soils, soils of various pH, heat, drought, and pollution. It makes an excellent formal or informal hedge, border, entranceway, foundation, utilitarian, group planting, naturalizing, or specimen shrub. It is very urban tolerant. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, it produces the brightest winter bark when planted in full sun. To keep the size of the plant in check and to encourage the most colorful bark, remove a third of the stems back to ground level each spring.
